Let’s be honest. When you run a small business, social media usually lands somewhere between “I’ll do it tonight” and “I’ll do it next week”. Then next week turns into next month, and your last Facebook post is a blurry photo from the Christmas party.
You’re not alone. We work with small businesses across Carmarthen and South West Wales every day, and the story is almost always the same. Owners know social media matters. They just don’t have the time, the energy or, frankly, the confidence to do it well alongside everything else.
The good news? Getting real results from social media doesn’t mean posting ten times a day or dancing on TikTok (unless you want to). It means doing a handful of things consistently and doing them properly. Here are the five that make the biggest difference for small businesses with between 1 and 20 people.
The top 5 things small businesses should be doing on social media
1. Pick the right platforms (and stop trying to be everywhere)
You don’t need to be on every platform. You need to be where your customers already hang out. A local cafe in Carmarthen will probably do brilliantly on Instagram and Facebook. A B2B consultancy in Swansea will get far more from LinkedIn.
Trying to cover five platforms badly is worse than covering two really well. Start by asking a simple question: where do my best customers spend their time online? Then focus your energy there and do it properly.
2. Post consistently, not constantly
The algorithm loves consistency, and so do your followers. Three good posts a week, every week, will beat a burst of fifteen posts followed by two months of silence.
The trick is planning ahead. A simple content calendar, mapped out a month at a time, takes the daily “what on earth do I post?” panic out of the equation. Batch your content in one sitting, schedule it, and get back to running your business.
3. Talk about your customers’ problems, not your features
Here’s where most small businesses go wrong. They post about what they do. “We offer X. We provide Y. Call us for Z.” Nobody scrolls social media hoping to read a brochure.
Instead, talk about the problems your customers have and how you solve them. Share tips that make their lives easier. Answer the questions they ask you on the phone every week. When people see you understand their world, they start trusting you long before they ever pick up the phone.
4. Show the people behind the business
People buy from people, especially from small businesses. Your biggest advantage over the big corporate players is that you’re real, local and human. So show it.
Introduce your team. Share what a normal day looks like. Celebrate your wins (and laugh about the occasional disaster). Behind-the-scenes content consistently gets some of the highest engagement, because it gives followers a reason to care about you, not just what you sell.
5. Measure what’s working and do more of it
Posting without checking your results is a bit like driving with your eyes shut. Every platform gives you free insights. Use them.
Once a month, look at which posts got the most likes, comments, shares and, most importantly, enquiries. Do more of what works and quietly drop what doesn’t. And don’t forget that social media works best as part of a bigger picture. Pairing it with a regular email newsletter or some targeted outreach can turn followers into paying customers far quicker.
